An old stump can get in the way of a lawn, a path or your next planting idea. Grinding reduces the stump below the adjacent soil level without excavating the whole root system.
A specialist machine progressively grinds the stump into small wood fragments. The depth and extent of grinding should be agreed in your quotation, along with any treatment of exposed buttress roots and the material left afterwards.
Access and underground services
Machine access matters. Let us know the narrowest passage width, steps, changes in level and any restricted parking. Point out underground cables, pipes, drainage and irrigation before work is planned.
What remains afterwards
Grinding does not remove every root spreading away from the stump. The mix of grindings and soil can settle as it decomposes. If you intend to turf, pave or plant in the same spot, discuss removal of grindings, suitable backfill and the preparation your next contractor will need.

Are all roots removed?+
No. Stump grinding focuses on the stump and the agreed surrounding area. Lateral roots extending through the garden usually remain.
Can you reach a back garden?+
Access depends on the machine and the route. Share passage widths, photographs and details of any steps so the options can be checked.
Can I plant in the same place afterwards?+
Sometimes, with suitable preparation. Grindings may need to be removed and the area backfilled. Discuss the intended planting so the agreed work supports your next step.
