Reduction shortens selected branches to reduce the overall spread or height of the canopy while retaining an appropriate framework. The extent of a suitable reduction depends on species, condition and the reason for the work.
Thinning selectively removes branches within the crown without substantially changing its overall size. Lifting removes selected lower branches to improve clearance below the canopy. These are different operations, and the right choice depends on what you want to achieve.
Dead branches can be removed where appropriate, taking account of the tree and the space below it. Excessive pruning or indiscriminate topping can create large wounds and weak regrowth. We discuss suitable timing, scope and protected-tree requirements before work.

USEFUL TO KNOW
For advice about your particular tree, please get in touch.
Crown reduction can reduce the canopy’s spread or height. Thinning and lifting serve different purposes and may not make the overall tree smaller.
No. Species, age, health and previous work affect how a tree responds. Heavy or inappropriate cutting may cause lasting damage. Discuss the result you need before deciding on the extent of pruning.
Timing depends on the species and the work proposed. Tell us what tree you have, if known, and we will discuss an appropriate approach.
